SISTERS OF ST. FRANCIS TO SELL YEARS

OF MOTHERHOUSE HISTORY

Buffalo News,   July 16, 1999  by Lisa Haarlander

As the Sisters of St. Francis prepare to leave their Amherst home after 71 years, a simple garage sale isn't enough to clean house.

Starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, collectors and bargain hunters can bid on a wide range of antiques and religious objects in the original St. Mary of the Angels motherhouse at 400 Mill St.

Some items are fairly ordinary: restaurant and laundry equipment, office furniture, and maintainance and groundskeeping items.

But some are unique pieces, such as the 14-foot carved marble altar and the massive organ with pipes extending into the upper stories of the building.

The sisters are also selling smaller organs and pianos, old oak furniture, china, crystal, silverware, candlesticks, valuable books, paintings and gold jewelry donated to the sisters.

Preview and registration for the event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and starting at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

Any items that are not bought will be offered at a lawn sale beginning at 9 a.m. Aug. 6 and 7. The lawn sale will also include items not offered at the auction. In all, the sisters will auction 1,199 items.

"You name it, we have it," said Sister Marian Rose. "The house we are moving into is much smaller than the one we have here. We're keeping only what we need for the new home."

The sisters plan to move into their newly constructed motherhouse at 201 Reist St. early this fall.

The order is leaving the motherhouse to put more of their energies into ministry rather than caring for the 71-year-old brick landmark. The sisters have sold the building and 85 acres to the Town of Amherst and the state Parks Department.
