FIGHT OVER PARK PATH IS UTTERLY RIDICULOUS
Buffalo News, May 17, 2001, Viewpoints
Just when I think I've witnessed the limits of individual temerity, something comes along to top it! These were my thoughts when I read the May 4 News article concerning the two affluent attorneys, George Kannar and Ellen Weissman, fighting to keep the public from strolling to within 30 feet of their property, which happens to adjoin the newly created Amherst State Park.
Thinking that I had missed some important fact, I reread the article several times in an attempt to discern the true nature of their complaint. I have to conclude that they are incensed by the possibility that they may have the unobstructed view, from their palatial $1 million home, sullied by glimpses of the local peasantry passing by on foot. This is a display of insularity and arrogance, unique even for Amherst residents.
I find it very difficult to dredge up much sympathy for these two individuals. They should be thankful that this land has been set aside as a state park and not sold off to private developers.
I was really mystified by Kannar's statement that he and his wife are only asking "for the same thing anyone else in Amherst would ask for and get." And what might that be?
Am I to conclude that if I petition the town to bar power-walkers from passing within 30 feet of my property that my wish will be granted? Can I also expect a private audience with our supervisor, Susan Grelick?
